History of Anklets

Untitled Document

Throughout history there have been all sorts of reasons for people to wear anklets, sometimes called ankle bracelets or ankle chains.

The practice of wearing anklets goes all the way back to the Sumerians of Ancient Mesopotamia, the first human civilization, where anklets worn by a wife indicated the wealth of her husband.

This carried in ancient Egypt, where both men and women wore anklets.  Wealthy people wore anklets of precious metals and gemstones, while the poor wore simple anklets of cloth and leather with charms.

In the Middle East, women wore anklets on each leg, with a short chain between the two, to create a shorter, more feminine step.

In India, anklets tell if the woman is married, and are an important part of the sari wedding costume.

Indian and Middle Eastern women add tiny bells to their anklets to accentuate their movements in dance.

Anklets become popular in the US in the 1950’s, worn with bobbie socks, and were used to denote a relationship the same way we use promise rings today.  Today, both young men and women wear cloth and leather anklets.  More upscale precious metal chain anklets are generally worn by young women, and are generally 9 to 10 inches long.
